Puppy Basics: The First Five Skills Worth Teaching

New puppy pet parents often try to teach everything at once, and the puppy ends up learning very little clearly. A better approach is to pick five foundational skills, teach them in short upbeat repetitions, and let everything else grow out of them.

Start with name response. A puppy who reliably turns toward you when you say their name gives you a way to interrupt trouble before it starts — which is far more useful in real life than a polished trick. Reward generously and never use the name as a scolding.

Next, sit. It is easy to teach, it gives the puppy something polite to do with their energy, and it becomes the default answer for doors, meals, greetings, and leash clipping. Then leash comfort: before you worry about heel position, let the puppy simply wear the leash indoors, follow you a few steps, and learn that pressure on the collar means turn toward you rather than pull harder.

Fourth is crate calm. A crate is not a punishment — it is a safe place to rest, an enormous help with potty training, and the reason your puppy can nap without chewing baseboards. Feed meals in there, keep the door open at first, and build duration slowly.

Finally, polite greetings. Jumping is reinforced by attention, so teach visitors and family to give attention only when four paws are on the floor. Add socialization at a confident pace: new surfaces, sounds, and calm people, always leaving the puppy wanting more rather than overwhelmed.
